Hendrik Bouman on his Compositions

The Réjouissance forms the final mouvement of my Ouverture & Suite in G major which I originally had written as a solo composition for harpsichord. I was soon tempted, however, to orchestrate the work for string orchestra, an interesting exercise for which I received a grant from the Ministry of Culture of Canada’s Prince Edward Island where I resided with my family at the time.

In addition to the customary dances, Orchestral Suites often counted among their various movements, various movements that had characteristic titles and escaped the strict definition of a dance type. So does Bach’s Orchestral  Suite IV end with a movement called Réjouissance. The rhythmic motif with which I open my composition may evoke the happy galloping of horses, although I rarely tend to depict realistic scenes. My sole intention was to translate in music the feeling of joyful vitality.”
