“My three-movement Sonata in A minor is situated in the post-Baroque style of the North German ‘Sturm und Drang’ - storm and stress - a mainly literary and musical movement that can be compared with early Romanticism in its excessive stress on emotions.

The middle movement, an Adagio, gives some relief to the tortured soul in between the stormy emotions represented in the outer movements, as if a ray of sunlight breaks through the gathering clouds and falls on a field, a face, or a petal.

The recording took place during the night; I remember the high degree of concentration I experienced when most of the world is at rest. I play on a modern Fazioli piano which revealed itself as remarkably souple and receptive to my intentions.”

In my approach to these piano compositions I savoured something of the fresh and eager spirit with which musicians in the 18th century explored this newcomer that gradually dethroned the harpsichord. Music coming directly from the Baroque heritage is being transformed on the piano with new technical horizons and a widening sound spectrum; a rich variety of emotional colours presents itself quite naturally to the musicians and composer.”
