Hendrik Bouman on his Compositions

“During my multiple visits to India since 1983, I have become gradually acquainted with the Hindu pantheon. My son Splendor, when he was young, had an interesting encounter with Garuda, the bird god - comparable to an angel - who had saved him from a very nasty fall. Now my son is an airline pilot, flies himself through the skies; coincidence?

I had composed the music of Garuda, dedicated to my flying son, initially as a string trio for the German ensemble Les Adieux. For that group, which specialises in the preclassical and classical period, I wanted to obtain a result that in form, language and expression had a close kinship with the music of Joseph Haydn with whom I sense a profound affinity.

Seven years later, when playing through the score, I was surprised by how effectively its rendering was on the harpsichord. The dynamic first movement is a story of evocative gestures, whereas the second movement is a Tempo di Minuetto.

I composed the Finale in a rondo form. Its recurring refrain, which in most rondos has a soothing working, is here of a more restless nature and of an invigorating folksy spirit.”
